The purpose of this assignment was to write a professional letter introducing my academic background to my Professors. This 1-2 essay was the first time I have ever written a professional letter.

Dear Professor. Zayas, Rodwell

Being the child of an immigrant family, the words hard work and academic prosperity have been instilled into my daily life both as a student and in life. Throughout my childhood I have always tried to challenge myself academically and accomplish every goal, aspiration I set forth. Now embarking on a new chapter in my life as a CCNY freshman I look to do the same. The next four years will be the determining factor on what I would like to achieve and the goals I will set for my life.

Being a freshman in the City College of New York many people have the same question. What do you want to do after you graduate college? This is a question that I cannot truthfully answer because I do not know what I would like to pursue as a career yet. This is why these next four years will be immensely important to my decision as to what I choose to do after graduation. The one thing I look forward to the most as a student at CCNY is the chance to meet a diverse new group of people whether it being my fellow students or my Professors. Due to the fact that this year’s semester is all online I looked to challenge myself and take advantage by enrolling in six classes including a non-credited math course. As a student in the Freshman Writing Inquiry Seminar I look to enhance my knowledge in my use of language and literacy. When I was creating my schedule for the first semester this course was the one that stood out to me most. This being because I knew taking this class will improve not only my writing but also my mind and in doing so will help guide me in all my other classes for the next four years.

Having immigrant parents, it was important to them to teach their children our native tongue. In doing so I grew up speaking and learning Greek before I learned English. The ability to be bilingual is something I am very thankful for however it was not always easy. Growing up I encountered speech problems when speaking English resulting to me going to a speech therapist for many years. Another issue I have had throughout the years of my education has been time management. Being involved in multiple after school activities such as sports and work. Being able to divide my time has been something I look to improve. Now as a freshman in college I work 15-20 hours a week at a pharmacy either after or between my classes.

Due to my family’s lessons and teachings as a child I am very excited to start my collegiate journey. Even though I do have my concerns as a freshman in a new setting I know that I can improve any weaknesses I might have by working hard and giving myself the chance to change. These next four years will be where I determine what I want to do for the rest of my life. This decision will not be easy but I am ready for any academic obstacle that comes my way.

How this assignment relates to my growth? Parts of any CLOs that address this growth?

This assignment related to my growth as a writer because it opened me up to a new genre of writing. Being only 18 I have not needed to write professional letters before however, I know the importance this can have in my future. Regarding the feedback given on this assignment I was told there was a lot of repetition in my writing. This resulted in me reading over my work and finding the exact points where I relayed the same information. Since then, I have had a cautious eye on any repetition made in other assignments.

The Course Learning Outcome (CLO) I addressed in this growth was CLO#1. This CLO is the exploration in writing a variety of genres and rhetorical situations. I addressed this CLO because it was my first time writing a professional letter and in order to complete this assignment I needed to explore the proper way to format this style of writing. In my exploration I searched for guidance through YouTube and Google on how to properly format a professional letter. Through this exploration of a new genre I addressed the first course learning outcome.
