Self-Reflection Essay

When reading the Exigence paper prompt, I was intrigued to start writing how I relate to my topic. Unlike the Exploratory paper we’ve done previously we were now allowed to personalize our work with our topic. This more lenient approach towards our writing style enabled me to write more comfortably. The idea of my paper was to write how my family and I relate to the ongoing issue the English language has on immigrants. Being able to connect with my Exploratory paper helped guide me in writing the Exigence paper.

The thought process when writing this paper was a lot less difficult and stressed than in past assignments. A major reason for this was because no research was needed since everything was based on my relation to the topic. I found this paper very interesting because I was able to write more freely and give my personal opinion about the topic. This free way of writing also challenged me in producing an academic style paper. Due to writing freely I drifted off course in my ideas and just wrote a personal story without any comparison to the topic. I wrote more about my parent’s immigrant story rather than talking about the power the English language had on their lives here. After the peer review I reviewed my paper with the feedback I received and knew how I had to transition my personal stories to the topic at hand. I learned that if I use the stories to make a point about my topic, I would accomplish what is being asked.

This paper has helped me understand how to better transition my topic with my ideas. This can ultimately help my future writing when given the freedom to personalize my work. One thing I believe I could have added to the exigence paper was a more coherent structure between my paragraphs. I hope to achieve more feedback on how to improve my work so I can apply it to my future assignments.

How this assignment relates to my growth? Parts of any CLOs that address this growth?

This assignment was done poorly and my grade showed it. Going through a stressful time I rushed writing this assignment and did not use the feedback given in the previous self-reflection essay as guidance. Reading the comments made by professor Rodwell I knew I did not meet the correct prompt for the paper. I did not explore my writing decisions nor how it affected the quality of my finished product. I can full heartedly say that I realized I needed to communicate more with classmates and the professor to get help regarding my work and ideas. Understanding why I received this grade has helped me be less stubborn in trying to complete everything on my own and to reach out for help.

The course learning outcome I addressed in this growth was CLO#4 which discusses “engaging in collaborative aspects to improve writing process”. Even though I did not engage with other students or the Professor when doing this assignment I realized that I should have. Being able to have communication with other students could have greatly improved my final product. Explaining my confusion to professor Rodwell also could have helped when doing the self-reflection.This course learning outcome addresses this growth because I have learned an important lesson to speak up when I do not understand what to do.
