Self-Reflection Essay
During the early stages of the Researched Critical Analysis essay, I decided to choose a topic that has significance in the American education system. In my paper I analyzed the two philosophies in America involving bilingual education. I also analyzed why bilingual education is important to immigrants and how it can help them. The RCA essay was a chance to delve deeper into our topics and with the help of sources make an argument. Unlike the exploratory paper our personal experiences and perspectives were able to be brought up however it must pertain with our analysis. The motivation I got to do this paper was personal. I went to a school that had a bilingual program and I have seen first-hand the benefits bilingual education has on children. When writing my paper, I hoped to properly state my analysis of the argument without causing any confusion for the reader. In order to connect with my audience, I tried to explain the research, I have done in a way that all readers can understand. Even though some people might not be interested in my topic I hoped to entice the readers by providing information they might have not known before. Regarding the course learning outcomes used to complete this paper I believe there were many. For example, I used CLO#1 by exploring and analyzing the research I had done in order to formulate this paper. I also used CLO#6 by locating sources in the CCNY library database. When doing this I needed to verify the credibleness of each source and decide which would work best for my analysis. Lastly, I used CLO#7 by writing my stance on bilingual education while backing everything I wrote with research and analysis. Completing this assignment has most definitely impacted my future writing. This is because I am used to either writing a full research paper where my perspective has no place or writing a personalized paper where I am able to write about my experiences. In this paper I was supposed to come up with an intelligent argument and then get the research to back that argument up while having an analysis of it. This was the first time I have written in this genre so it has opened my horizons as a writer and a critical thinker.
How this assignment relates to my growth? Parts of any CLOs that address this growth?
This self-reflection essay was the last time we were reflecting on our papers for the course. Using the feedback I received from Professor Rodwell on my two previous Self-Reflection essay I tried my best to avoid the mistakes made when writing my third one. Even though I still failed to get a perfect score I was given feedback saying I was on my way to make a good self-reflection. This has helped me grow because I am going to use this assignment and the two previous ones as guidance to my final Self-Reflection.
The Course Learning Outcome I addressed when doing this assignment is CLO #3. This CLO mentions recognizing the rhetorical terms and strategies in my writing. I addressed this CLO because I needed to write the rhetorical situation of my paper and writing process. Another CLO that was addressed when completing this assignment was CLO #2. This CLO mentions developing strategies to reading and revising the work done. I addressed this because I used the first two self-reflection essays and their feedback as guidance to produce the third. I revised and edited my previous work and wrote this Self-Reflection essay.
